Holy Chapel of Saint Marina

On the eastern side of the village of Asgata, next to the bed of the Arkosykia River, rises the renovated chapel of Saint Marina. At this spot previously existed the ruins of a much older church, where the residents had located, hidden within a large clay pithos, the icon of the Saint together with a lamp. The first modern but plain little church was founded in 1937 through the care of the local associations, while in 1952 it received interior additions, such as the iconostasis and the stalls. The radical change came in 1993, when the old structure was demolished to give its place to the present, elegant church, which follows the architectural type of the single-aisled basilica. The surrounding space has been fully redeveloped with paving and tree planting, transforming the chapel into a serene spiritual destination. Historically, the area is connected with a source of holy spring (agiasma) that gushed in the river, where the faithful left votive offerings requesting the protection of Saint Marina.
