Holy Church Evaggelistou Luke

This historic church is the central and largest church of the occupied community of Spatharikon in the Famagusta district. It is a structure that belongs to the type of the single-aisled vaulted basilica of the late Ottoman period, a characteristic example of the religious architecture of the Mesaoria. After the events of the Turkish invasion of 1974, the church was violently cut off from its displaced flock and remained closed for decades; however, in recent years rare, moving services are held there by the refugee inhabitants on the occasion of the annual feast of the Evangelist.
