Holy Church of Archangel Michael

This historic church is the central church of the occupied community of Charkeia, which is built on the northern slopes of the Pentadaktylos mountain range in the Kyrenia district. It was erected around the mid-19th century, probably replacing an older shrine, and presents a simple single-space structure, with its floor standing out for its traditional construction of rounded sea pebbles. After the events of the Turkish invasion of 1974, the inhabitants were driven out and the structure was completely abandoned to the wear of time, remaining without maintenance and inaccessible to the displaced Christian flock. Today, the monument stands silent within the mountainous forest of the area, being yet another wounded symbol of the island's cultural heritage.
