Holy Church of Holy Cross

This majestic parish church was the spiritual centre of the refugee district of Stavros of the same name in the town of Famagusta. It is a large edifice with exposed arches and a tall, imposing bell tower that dominates the area. After the tragic events of the Turkish invasion of 1974, the church found itself within the fenced-off and militarily controlled zone (Varosha), so that it remains completely desecrated, empty of its holy icons and inaccessible to its faithful.
