Holy Church of Panagia Lysis

This imposing and majestic church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary the Evangelistria, dominates the centre of the occupied town of Lysi. It is an impressive architectural edifice with strong Gothic elements and elaborate carved bell towers, which was built with the voluntary labour and financing of the Lysi inhabitants themselves. After the Turkish invasion of 1974, the church was desecrated, savagely looted and stripped of its invaluable relics, remaining to this day inaccessible for the free celebration of Christian sacraments.
