Holy Church of Saint Photios Gialousas (Ruins)

This extremely important Middle Byzantine church is located to the south of the road that connects Gialousa with Rizokarpaso, within the administrative boundaries of Karpasia. It is built upon the ruins of an older early Christian double-aisled basilica, with its present structure belonging to the rare internally cross-shaped type of the single-aisled church with a dome. As the monument lacks a roof and is protected as an archaeological site, it was recently saved from total collapse thanks to urgent consolidation works of the bicommunal Technical Committee for Cultural Heritage. Because of the Turkish occupation since 1974, the church remains violently cut off from the Orthodox flock, being a silent witness to the Byzantine history of the island.
