Holy Monastery of Panagia Amirous

This historic women's monastery is nestled at the foothills of the Kakomalli mountain range, between the communities of Apsiou and Mathikoloni. According to ecclesiastical tradition, it was founded by a Syrian Emir whose blind daughter was miraculously healed when she washed her eyes in the holy spring (agiasma) that gushed there. After periods of desolation, the monastery was fully re-established at the end of the 20th century, while in recent years it was expanded with the erection of a new, modern church and guesthouses for the needs of the faithful.
