Saint Catherine

This is a stone-built structure of exceptional importance from the 14th century, which combines elements of Byzantine architecture. The church bears strongly the marks of Cyprus's turbulent history, as in 1570 it was converted into an Ottoman mosque. After conservation works by the Department of Antiquities, precious 15th-century wall paintings came to light (such as that of Saint Bacchus). Today the structure is protected by UNESCO as part of the world cultural heritage.
