Saint Nikolas

This small and historic Chapel of Saint Nicholas is the first Byzantine church that one encounters as one enters the community of Galata from the eastern side. It is a rectangular, single-aisled structure of mountainous Cyprus, constructed with traditional materials, such as rough stones and mud. In its interior, despite the wear of time, precious remnants of 16th-century wall paintings survive on the north wall, depicting the figures of three ascetic monks. Owing to its extremely limited space, the church functions mainly as a quiet religious sight of the Solea valley and is not suitable for social sacraments.
