Tomb of Saint Irakleiou (Ruins)

The site 'Agios Iraklios' in Kofinou houses the remains of an ancient religious centre. Recent archaeological research by the University of Cyprus revealed that the medieval single-space church (martyrion) was built directly upon the ruins of an older, majestic three-aisled basilica of the 7th century. The church had rich interior decoration with wall paintings, while around it was discovered the first organised rural cemetery of the early Christian period in Cyprus, proving the timeless sacredness and the use of the location over the centuries.
